Butchart powers Patriots to victory over Mitchell
MITCHELL – Blair Butchart turned in a four-point performance in his return to the Mount Forest Patriots Friday night.
Butchart had two goals and two assists as the Patriots downed the Mitchell Hawks 5-3 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play at the Mitchell arena.
Butchart was the Patriots’ leading scorer during the 2017-18 season when he had 23 goals and 79 points in 40 regular-season games. An overager from Palmerston, Butchart started the season in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League with the St. Marys Lincolns where he had six goals and 20 assists in 21 games. He had nine goals, 56 points and 90 penalty minutes in 43 games with the Lincolns last season.
Friday, the Patriots and Mitchell were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period before Mount Forest shot ahead 4-2 by the end of the second.
Jack Birkett, Michael Stefanelli and Ryley Cribbin scored the other goals for the Patriots while Cribbin had three assists, Hayden Coulter had two and Stefanelli, Troy Weber and Thomas Coulter had one apiece.
Jake Finlayson, Tanner Hertel and Carter Lewis struck for the goals for Mitchell. Assists were awarded to Ethan Hill, Brett Denny, Jarett Bogdon, Tyson Hall, Callum McMann and Max Hall.
The Patriots outshot the Hawks 37-28 and went 1-for-4 on their power play while Mitchell was scoreless on two power plays.
Aidan Quish was the winning netminder for Mount Forest. He had 25 saves while losing goalie Seth Monkhouse had 32 saves.
The Patriots (14-3-1-0) and Wingham Ironmen (14-5-1-0) are tied for the Pollock Division lead although Mount Forest has two games in hand. Mitchell is third at 11-7-0-2.
The Patriots and Ironmen are to battle Saturday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8 p.m.
