Canes doubled by Listowel with three goals in third period

LISTOWEL — The Guelph Hurricanes surrendered three goals in the final 11 minutes of the game, including two while playing shorthanded, to drop a 4-2 decision to the Midwestern Conference-leading Listowel Cyclones in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Listowel Memorial Arena.

Listowel had scored the only goal of the first period before a scoreless second.

The Canes battled back to grab the lead before the third period was three minutes old on goals by Lyam Cripps at 0:46 and Nicholas Bird at 2:28.

However, the hosts weren’t done as they responded with three goals later in the period to claim the win and spoil the solid effort by the locals.

Listowel went 3-for-6 on the power play and held the Canes scoreless on five power plays.

Chris Poletek assisted on both Guelph goals while Anthony Mota and Lucas Dybowski also had assists.

Alec Tiley, Mitch Deelstra, Chayse Herrfort and Holdyn Lansink scored the goals for Listowel while Jakob Lee had two assists and Max Coyle, Jamie Huber, Ben VanOoteghem, Tiley, Lansink and Deelstra each had one assist.

Listowel outshot Guelph 40-27. Kristian Hufsky took the loss in the Guelph net while Brock Baier was the winner for Listowel.

Listowel leads the conference with a 31-7-1-2 record. The Cyclones are two points ahead of the Elmira Sugar Kings (31-9-1-0). The top seven in the conference have clinched playoff berths while the other spot in the playoffs will go to either the Canes (13-26-2-1), Brampton Bombers (10-27-2-5) or Brantford 99ers (8-28-2-4).

Guelph has eight games to go in its regular season and have two games in hand on Brampton. Brantford also has eight games to play.

The Canes are to host Elmira Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
