Canes get Guelph forward Mooney from Wellesley

GUELPH – The Guelph Hurricanes of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League have acquired forward Seamus Mooney from the Wellesley Applejacks of the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Guelph native had two goals and two assists in nine games with Wellesley this season.

Last season Mooney had three goals, 10 assists and 24 penalty minutes with the Applejacks after starting the season with the Milton Icehawks of the Ontario Junior Hockey League where he had a goal, three assists and 24 penalty minutes in 19 games.

Mooney had been a member of the Guelph Junior Gryphons midget AAA team in 2014-15.

The move comes less than a week after the Canes placed forward Jacob Rooke on the season-ending injury reserve list. Rooke suffered a concussion in the third period of the season-opening 2-0 win over the Thorold Blackhawks in the Showcase Tournament at Brantford Sept. 9.

The Canes (6-7-1-2) will be looking to put an end to their five-game losing streak when they play the Stratford Warriors (11-2-0-0) at Stratford Friday. The losing streak started with a 3-2 loss in double OT to the Warriors at Stratford Oct. 6.
