Canes lose to 99ers to fall into tie with 99ers

BRANTFORD – The Guelph Hurricanes find themselves tied for seventh place in the eight-team Midwestern Conference after they were handed a 4-2 setback by the Brantford 99ers in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Thursday night at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Complex.

Brantford scored twice in the third period for the win. The teams had battled scoreless through the first period and netted two goals apiece in the second.

A rarity this season, the Canes had more players dressed for the game than their opponents as they had 19 and Brantford had 18.

Mathieu Mercier on a power play and Seamus Mooney scored eight minutes apart to give the Canes a 2-1 lead with a minute and a half to go in the second. Assists went to Anthony Mota, Keanan Stewart, newcomer Matthew Chard and Mason Sinkeldam. Chard was obtained from the Thorold Blackhawks in a deal earlier in the day.

Christian Polillo tied it for Brantford with 45 seconds to go in the second while Eric Eschweiler put the hosts ahead with a power-play goal just shy of the three-minute mark of the third. Jordan Stock added an empty-netter for the 99ers while Max Racicot had opened the scoring four and a half minutes into the second period.

Will Hurley, Jack Gaffney, Kyle West and Mitchell Devins-Cann had assists for Brantford.

The 99ers outshot the Canes 28-26 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while Guelph went 1-for-3.

Jet Greaves took the loss in net for the Canes while Mat Worokiuk collected the win for Brantford.

The result leaves the teams tied for seventh with 19 points apiece. Brantford, at 9-18-0-1, has a game in hand on the Canes (7-17-1-4). The Brampton Bombers (10-15-0-0) have 20 points and Kitchener Dutchmen (10-16-0-2) have 22.

The Canes have two consecutive home games against the Elmira Sugar Kings then three consecutive games against Brampton. They’re to host Elmira Saturday and Thursday at the Sleeman Centre. Then they’re to play at Brampton Dec. 15 and Dec. 22 and host the Bombers Dec. 23. All five games have 7:30 p.m. game times.
