Canes road woes continue in loss at Kitchener

KITCHENER – A pair of goals 44 seconds apart early in the second period sparked the Kitchener Dutchmen to a 6-2 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Tuesday night at Kitchener’s Kinsmen Arena.

The loss was the third consecutive loss for the Canes and their 15th straight road loss.

The Dutchmen led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 5-2 after the second.

Anthony Mota scored both goals for Guelph while assists went to Matthew Chard and Aiden Matekovic.

Sean Kawalec netted a pair of goals for Kitchener while singletons were added by Kole Scott, Blair Derynck, Austin Gaboury and Jeff Schrattner. Gaboury and Tyler Harrison had two assists apiece while Adam Pys, Steve Mariani, Liam Hurley, Carter Lennon, Chris Taylor and Jordan White each had one.

Kitchener outshot the Canes 38-23 and went 3-for-8 on its power play while Guelph went 1-for-4.

The two quick goals chased Jet Greaves from the Guelph net. He took the loss and was replaced by Trenton McGrail and both goalies faced 19 shots. Matthew Chen was the winner in the Kitchener net, turning aside 21 shots.

The Canes are at 9-23-1-4 and tied for seventh with the Brantford 99ers who have three games in hand. Kitchener is fifth at 17-18-0-2.

The Canes are to play the Stratford Warriors (26-8-1-1) at Stratford Friday at 7:30 p.m. and host the Waterloo Siskins (19-13-1-3) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
