Canes swept from playoffs by Listowel

GUELPH – The Guelph Hurricanes saw their Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League season come to an end Thursday night when they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Listowel Cyclones at the Sleeman Centre.

The win gave Listowel a four-game sweep of the best-of-seven Midwestern Conference quarter-final playoff series. The Cyclones had finished in first place in the conference with a 43-5-0-2 record while the Canes were 56 points behind in eighth at 12-30-1-7.

Listowel scored four times in the first period on its way to the win. The second was scoreless while the lone goal for the Canes, scored by Liam Buckley, came midway through the third period.

Aiden Matekovic and Matthew Tolton assisted on the Guelph goal.

Tommy Hoogars, Cullen Mercer, Brady Anderson, Keaton Willis and Chayse Herrfort had a goal apiece for Listowel. Holdyn Lansink collected two assists while Herrfort, Caleb Warren, Brett Primeau, Anderson, Ben VanOoteghem and Jakob Lee each had one assist.

The Cyclones outshot the Canes 34-29 and scored on each of their three power plays while the Canes were scoreless on four power plays.

Jet Greaves was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net while Max Wright picked up the win for Listowel.

It’s the third consecutive time the Canes have been swept from the conference quarter-finals and the seventh consecutive series loss.

Listowel advances to play either the fourth-place Waterloo Siskins or fifth-place Kitchener Dutchmen in the conference semifinals. Waterloo and Kitchener are tied 3-3 in their conference quarter-final with the seventh game set for Sunday afternoon at Waterloo.

The second-place Stratford Warriors and third-place Elmira Sugar Kings are to meet in the other conference semifinal after both swept their conference quarter-finals. Stratford ousted the seventh-place Brantford 99ers and Elmira eliminated the sixth-place Brampton Bombers.
