Celtics closing in on clinching first in senior hoops

GUELPH – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics closed in on clinching a first-place finish in the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball league with a 61-19 victory over the Lourdes Crusaders Wednesday.

With three games to go in their regular season, the Celtics are a perfect 9-0. The only team that can mathematically finish ahead of Bishop Mac is the Orangeville Bears who are at 5-2 with five games to play. Both the Centennial Spartans and St. James Lions are at 5-3 with four games to play and both can finish tied with the Celtics. Those three teams are the three opponents left on Bishop Mac’s league schedule and the Celtics have beaten each of them once already.

Alicia Higgins led Bishop Mac with 16 points Wednesday while Maddie St. Denis had nine.

Ronette Eimar had nine for Lourdes while Rachelle Casupanan netted five.

 

Junior

St. James 51 Centre Wellington 25

Elivia Garbuio connected for 15 points for St. James while Ella Farrelly had nine.

Sarah Tindall led Centre Wellington with eight and Josie Hayward contributed seven.

 

Lourdes 29 Bishop Macdonell 21

Ashley Ciccia hit for 15 points for Lourdes and Isabella Banni added 10.

Madeline Tavares had eight for Bishop Mac and J. Sarmiento had six.
