Celtics seniors, Gaels juniors capture D10 soccer titles

GUELPH – The Bishop Macdonell Celtics and Guelph CVI Green Gaels claimed the District 10 boys’ soccer crowns Tuesday at College Heights Secondary School.

Bishop Mac scored twice in the final 15 minutes to edge the Ross Royals 3-2 in the senior final while GCVI took the junior final over the Centennial Spartans by prevailing in a shootout.

In the senior final, the teams scored once apiece in the opening half.

The Celtics opened the scoring about 20 minutes in and the Royals got the equalizer with a minute to go in the half.

Ross jumped on a Bishop Mac miscue five minutes into the second half to shoot ahead.

Bishop Mac pressed after that and pulled even on a goal that was headed home about half an hour into the half.

The winning goal was similar to that one with the Celtics heading in the game’s final goal with about two minutes to play.

Gianluca Bianchi scored twice for Bishop Mac while Patrick Brasseau had the other goal.

Ross received goals from Jefferson Brown and Noah Janssen.

Both teams qualify for the CWOSSA championship tournaments in the spring, Bishop Mac in AA at Owen Sound and Ross in AAA at Kitchener.

In the D10 junior final, 80 minutes of regulation play and 20 minutes of extra time solved nothing as the Gaels and Spartans were tied 2-2.

That sent the match to penalty kicks and the Gaels grabbed the title by scoring twice.

Marko Trkulja and Omar Ladhani had scored in regulation time for GCVI while Logan Lontok and Tristan Gemore had the goals for Centennial.

The game was the final junior match of the school year as the CWOSSA junior tournament has been cancelled.
