Centennial Spartans all alone in first in senior hoops

GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans scored a 36-34 victory over the Bishop Macdonell Celtics in District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball play Thursday.

Sarah Cobey led the Spartans with a game-high 18 points.

Tyla Timlock had 12 for two-time defending champion Bishop Mac.

The result put an end to a 24-game winning streak in D10 league play for the Celtics. They hadn’t suffered a defeat in league play since dropping a 45-33 match to the Lourdes Crusaders Nov. 3, 2017. Lourdes is not participating in the league this year.

The win was the fourth in as many league outings this year for Centennial.

Centennial sits atop this year’s standings at 4-0 while four teams are tied with four points apiece – Bishop Mac, Orangeville Scarlet Bears and St. James Lions each at 2-1 and Ross Royals at 2-2. Centre Wellington Falcons are at 0-3 while the Guelph CVI Green Gaels are at 0-4.

Sarah Hopkins led Ross with an 11-point outing.

Frances Wolkensperg had nine for Centre Wellington.

Junior

Lourdes 27 St. James 22

Melia Tessel collected 10 points for Lourdes while Alex Tessier had six and Ashley Pallaya added five.

Eva Wenger had 12 points for St. James and Mia Boucher chipped in with four.

 

Ross 63 Centre Wellington 20

Bronwyn Sweeney had a game-high 21 points for Ross.

Gwen Millson Currie contributed four for Centre Wellington.

 

Guelph CVI 64 Orangeville 17

Jordyn Best’s 15 points topped GCVI’s scoring list while Maddy Boyd had nine and Acadia Tremain had eight.

T. Azar led Orangeville with eight points while M. Wilson had four.
