Centre Dufferin posts quarter-final surprise in boys’ hockey

FERGUS – The Centre Dufferin Royals sprung a huge surprise in the District 4/10 high school hockey quarter-finals Thursday.

Centre Dufferin, sixth-place finishers at the end of the eight-team league’s regular season, knocked off the Centre Wellington Falcons 5-3 at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.

The league’s northern Royals had finished the regular season at 4-8-0-0 while Centre Wellington was at 8-2-1-1. Centre Dufferin had dropped both games it played against Centre Wellington during the regular season, losing 4-1 Nov. 12 at Fergus and 5-1 Dec. 11 at Shelburne.

Centre Dufferin had been tripled 6-2 by the Orangeville Bears last week in its final regular-season game after forfeiting four consecutive games.

In the other quarter-finals, the Ross Royals dropped the Centennial Spartans 11-1 at the Victoria Road arena, Orangeville blanked the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 6-0 at the Tony Rose arena and the Norwell Varsity Reds defeated the Wellington Heights Wolverines 5-1 at the Palmerston arena.

Scoring details were not reported for any of the games.

The semifinals are to go next week.

Norwell is to play Orangeville at Orangeville’s Tony Rose arena Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Ross is to host Centre Dufferin at the Victoria Road arena Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
