
Centre Dufferin surprises again in senior soccer final
HILLSBURGH – The Centre Dufferin Royals continued their surprising playoff run as they captured the District 4 high school senior boys’ soccer title with a 3-2 victory over the Erin Raiders Wednesday at Barbour Field.
Centre Dufferin had finished the regular season in fourth place in the six-team league at 4-4-2 while Erin was second at 7-1-2. Erin had won one of the two regular-season meetings with the Royals 2-0 at Centre Dufferin while the other one at Barbour Field had finished in a 1-1 stalemate.
The Royals also ousted the first-place Westside Thunder (8-0-2) in Monday’s semifinals.
Gonzalo Marquez scored all three goals for the Royals in the championship match.
Erin’s scorers were not reported.
Both Centre Dufferin and Erin advance to CWOSSA championship tournaments next spring. The Royals are to play in the AA tournament at Owen Sound while the Raiders are to play in the A tournament at Delhi. Both tournaments are scheduled for May 29 to 31.
