Centre Wellington, Ross move on to girls’ semifinals

GUELPH – The Centre Wellington Falcons and Ross Royals claimed berths in the District 4/10 high school girls’ rugby league’s semifinals with quarter-final victories Monday.

Centre Wellington scored six tries on its way to a 34-0 win over the Bishop Macdonell Celtics at Bishop Mac.

Scorers were not reported.

Ross blanked the Wellington Heights Wolverines 20-0 and received tries from Emily Cooper, Drue Costello, Sara Ferris and Emma O’Reilly.

Ross had finished first in the league’s Pool B with a 4-0-0 record while Centre Wellington was third at 2-2-0.

Bishop Mac was second in Pool A at 3-1-0 and Wellington Heights was fourth at 1-3-0.

All teams in Pool B are the larger AAA schools while Pool A’s teams were all AA schools.

The quarter-finals are to continue Tuesday with the Erin Raiders hosting the Guelph CVI Green Gaels and the Westside Thunder playing their Orangeville rivals, the Orangeville Scarlet Bears.

Orangeville was second in Pool B at 3-1-0 while GCVI was fourth at 1-3-0. Erin was first in Pool A at 4-0-0 and Westside third at 1-3-0.

Winners advance to Thursday’s semifinals.

The championship match is scheduled for May 22 at Eastview Park at 5:15 p.m.


Junior Boys

The league is to complete its regular season Tuesday with the Centre Dufferin Royals and Erin Raiders meeting at Erin Public School.

Ross Royals completed an undefeated regular season with a 50-0 win over the Guelph CVI Green Gaels Monday.

Sam Berry led the Royals with 20 points while Max Nixon had 15 and Ty Dokis, Snedden and Daniel each had five.

Tuesday’s game means nothing for the final order of the standings as they’ve already been decided. Ross will finish first at 6-0-0 while Centre Dufferin will be second, GCVI third at 2-4-0 and Erin fourth. Centre Dufferin enters Tuesday’s game at 3-2-0 and Erin at 0-5-0.

The semifinals will pit Ross against Erin and Centre Dufferin against GCVI.

The final is slated for May 22 at 4 p.m. at Eastview Park.


Senior Boys

The quarter-finals are set for Tuesday with sixth-place Centre Dufferin Royals (1-4-0) playing the third-place Erin Raiders (3-2-0) at Erin Public School at 3 p.m. and the fifth-place Centennial Spartans (1-4-0) playing the fourth-place Guelph CVI Green Gaels (2-3-0) at Varsity Field at 4 p.m.

Winners advance to Thursday’s semifinals.

Getting byes in the quarter-finals were the first-place Ross Royals (5-0-0) and the second-place Centre Wellington Falcons (3-2-0). They’ll each host a semifinal match.

The final is scheduled for May 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Eastview Park.
