Centre Wellington taking aim at OFSAA medal

MIDLAND – The Centre Wellington Falcons of Fergus are to play for a medal at the OFSAA provincial high school girls’ AAA hockey championship tournament Friday.

The CWOSSA AAA and District 10-champion Falcons won two more games Thursday.

The 10th-seed Falcons completed pool play with a 4-1 win over 16th-seed St. Peter’s Panthers of Barrie.

Centre Wellington followed that win with a 6-1 triumph over 15th-seed St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears of North Bay in the quarter-finals.

Top two in each pool gained berths in the quarter-finals.

In pool play Wednesday, Centre Wellington had defeated fifth-seed Bishop Tonnos Titans of Ancaster and third-seed St. Maximilian Kolbe Mustangs of Aurora.

In Thursday’s other quarter-finals, Kolbe downed fourth-seed St. Peter’s Saints of Peterborough 4-1, top-seed and two-time defending champion Medway Cowboys of Arva downed 13th-seed Sacred Heart Huskies of Ottawa 6-1 and eighth-seed Our Lady of Mount Carmel Lions of Mississauga slipped by seventh-seed Lawrence Park Panthers of Toronto 3-1.

Centre Wellington is to play Mount Carmel in one semifinal while Medway is to play Kolbe in the other. Both are set for 9 a.m.

Winners advance to the gold-medal game slated for 1:30 p.m. while the losers are to meet in the bronze-medal match at 12:45 p.m.

The Falcons haven’t lost in league or playoff action this season. Thursday’s wins ran their undefeated streak to 20 games as they won all 10 of their District 10 league matches and followed that with two wins in the D10 playoffs to claim the title. They won four consecutive games to win the CWOSSA AAA tournament and have won four in a row at the provincial tournament.

Centre Wellington’s last loss in league or playoff action was in last year’s D10 final.

No CWOSSA champion has ever won the OFSAA girls’ AAA title.
