Clarkson’s late goals sink Gryphon hockey men

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered a pair of goals in the final minute and a half of the game to drop a 4-3 decision to the Clarkson Golden Knights in preseason university men’s hockey play Saturday night at Clarkson’s Cheel Arena.

Clarkson had scored the only goal of the first period, but the Gryphs surged ahead 3-2 by the end of the second.

The Golden Knights, who compete in NCAA Division 1’s ECAC Hockey, pulled even with a power-play goal with 1:19 to play and won it with an even-strength goal 39 seconds later.

Todd Winder, Connor Branwell and Matt Kenney scored for the Gryphs while assists were awarded to Michael Stevens, Stephen Templeton, Winder, Jesse Saban, Ryan Miglaccio and Andres Kopstals.

Grant Cooper had two goals for Clarkson while Kevin Charyszyn and Marly Quince also scored. Getting one assist each were Quince, Juho Jokiharju, Jamie Collins, Greg Moro, Connor McCarthy, Brian Hurley, Michael Underwood and Nick Campoli.

Clarkson outshot the Gryphs 25-20

Andrew Masters has 21 saves, but took the loss in net for the Gryphs. Jake Kielly and Nicholas Latinovich split time in the Clarkson net with Kielly making 11 saves and winning netminder Latinovich making six.

The game was the first of the season for Clarkson while it was Guelph’s fifth preseason match. They’re 2-3-0.

The Gryphs are to complete their preseason with a game against another ECAC Hockey squad Sunday when they’re to battle the Colgate Raiders at Hamilton, N.Y., at 4 p.m.

The Gryphs are to host the Ryerson Rams in their regular-season opener Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
