Cold-shooting Gryphon hoops men beaten by Brock Badgers
ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons were cold with their shooting as they suffered a 76-67 loss to the seventh-ranked Brock Badgers in OUA men’s basketball play Friday night at Brock’s Bob Davis Gym.
The Gryphs shot 33.8 per cent from the floor, 19.2 per cent from beyond the arc and 48 per cent from the line in the setback.
By comparison, Brock shot 39.2 per cent from the floor, 20 per cent from beyond the arc and 68.4 per cent from the line.
The Gryphs did get off to a quick start as they held a six-point lead early in the first quarter, but Brock recovered to shoot ahead and lead by as much as the 16-point advantage they had midway through the third quarter.
Brock led 21-16 at the end of the first quarter, 41-31 at halftime and 53-46 at the completion of the third quarter.
Rasheed Weekes led the Gryphs with 20 points while Tommay Yanchus had 18 and Malcolm Glanville added nine. Weekes and J.L. Nwosu each hauled down 10 rebounds and Glanville had two steals. Keenan Dowell and Glanville each had three assists.
Brock had four players in double digits in scoring as Dabiel Cayer had 23 points, Aaron Golbourne had 15, Kascius Small-Martin had 13 and Godsman Kwakwah had 10. Cayer had 16 rebounds and five steals while Tyler Brown had seven assists.
The Gryphs are fourth in the West Division at 1-2 while Brock is third in the Central Division at 2-2.
The Gryphs are to play the McMaster Marauders (second in the Central Division at 3-1) at McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium Saturday at 8 p.m.
