Comeback by Gryphon volleyball women falls short

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons continued to flirt with the .500 winning percentage mark as they fell below the break-even point with a 3-2 loss to the Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s volleyball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

After dropping the first two sets, the Gryphs attempted a comeback, but they fell short as Queen’s won 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 22-25, 15-12.

The Gaels had a .198 kill percentage in the match while the Gryphs were at .177. Queen’s had 65 kills and also served up eight aces while the Gryphs had 54 kills and four aces.

Michaela Hellinga had 17 kills, an ace and 13 digs for Guelph while Jessica Chung had 11 kills, an ace three digs and three blocks, Cassidy Collins had seven kills and four digs and Sophia Herrera had seven kills and six digs.

Julia Wiercigroch had 16 kills, 18 digs and a block for Queen’s while Danielle Corrigan had 13 kills, an ace, two digs and a block.

The loss drops the Gryphs to 5-6, good for fifth in the West Division and Queen’s improves to 6-4. The Gaels are tied for third in the East Division.

The match was the first of four consecutive home games for the Gryphs who are to host the RMC Paladins (0-10) Saturday at 6 p.m.
