Creeks claim Mississauga North tournament title
MISSISSAUGA – The Guelph Silvercreeks went unbeaten in five games on the weekend to claim the championship of the Mississauga North tournament, their first tournament of the year.
The Creeks finished atop their division after they defeated the St. Thomas Tomcats 13-1 in their tournament opener before tying Leaside Leafs 5-5 and blanking the Vaughan Vikings 13-0. Guelph had five points, St. Thomas four, Vaughan two and Leaside one.
That put them in the crossover semifinals where they edged the Kitchener Junior Panthers 7-6. A rematch with St. Thomas came in the championship match and the Creeks won that one 11-6.
St. Thomas and Kitchener are both Intercounty Baseball Association 22U league rivals while Leaside and Vaughan are in the Toronto-Leaside league.
The Creeks used seven pitchers with Spencer Bertelsen, Jason Boulanger, Justin Philp and Ryan Kush getting wins and Hayden Zweig and Bertelsen getting saves.
At the plate, Jackson Wahl hit .562 and drove in 14 runs while Arthur Kowara had a homer and eight RBIs. Kush drove in five runs while Aidan Mendoza hit .571 and drove in three runs and E.J. Martinez hit .500 and also had three RBIs. Ashton Patterson hit .500 and had two RBIs.
The Creeks are also scheduled to compete in the Brampton tournament July 15 to 17 before participating in Baseball Ontario’s provincial elimination tournament July 21 to 25.
