Creeks clout Milton to begin season

MILTON – The Guelph Silvercreeks opened their Central Ontario junior baseball league season with a 14-2 victory over the Milton Mets Saturday night at Milton Community Park.

After the teams scored a run apiece in the first inning, the Creeks took control with five runs in the second and four more in the third. Milton added its other run in the seventh and Guelph brought the game to an end an inning early with four runs in the eighth to force the 10-run mercy rule.

The Creeks clobbered 14 hits in the game and held Milton to four. The Mets also committed four errors.

Tyler MacKillop started on the mound for the Creeks and picked up the win as he yielded a hit and three walks in five innings. He had five strikeouts. Blaise Shaw relieved and went the rest of the way. He gave up three hits and two walks in three innings and had three strikeouts.

Darren Dwyer hit a triple and a single for the Creeks while Jodon Inkol smacked a double and a single. Shaw, Trystan Dennie and Lucas Smit each hit two singles while Nic Lannutti had a double and Jackson Toms, Scott Seifried and Graham Wilmot each hit a single.

Next game for the Creeks is set for Monday at 7:30 p.m. against the Burlington Bulls (1-0-0) at Burlington’s Nelson Park. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Guelph’s home opener is scheduled for May 23 when they’re to host the Hamilton Junior Cardinals (1-0-0) at Hastings Stadium starting at 7:30 p.m.

While the Central Ontario and Inter-County junior leagues played an interlocking schedule last year, that isn’t the case this year as they’re keeping their games strictly within their own leagues.

Joining the Creeks in the Central Ontario loop this year are Milton, Burlington, Hamilton, Brampton Royals, Dundas Chiefs, Halton Hills Eagles, Mississauga Southwest Twins and two teams representing the Mississauga North Tigers.

Playing in the Inter-County league are Brantford Braves, Kitchener-Waterloo Junior Panthers, London Junior Tecumsehs, Port Dover Clippers and Stratford Nationals.
