Creeks come back to top Waterloo in season opener

KITCHENER – The Guelph Silvercreeks opened their Intercounty Baseball Association 22U season with a 5-3 victory over the Waterloo Tigers Monday night at Lions Park.

The Creeks scored three runs in the final two innings to claim the victory.

The Creeks had led 2-1 after the second inning as they scored single runs in the first and second innings while Waterloo scored its run in the first. The Tigers tied it with a run in the third and then shot ahead with another run in the fifth.

The Guelph side regained the lead with two runs in the eighth and wrapped up the scoring with a run in the ninth.

The locals had eight hits in the match, committed an error and left four on base. Waterloo claimed 10 hits, committed three errors and stranded seven.

For the Creeks, Owen Vickers had two hits including a double while Alex Camilo also had two hits and a stolen base. Owen Ellis had a double and an RBI while Jacob McWhirter and Ryan Cutten each had a hit and RBI.

Garrett Thornton picked up the win for the Creeks as he held Waterloo scoreless in the final two innings. He had three strikeouts.

Ryan Kush started and surrendered two earned runs in the first three innings. He walked one and struck out four.

John Filice also yielded a walk and had four strikeouts in four innings of work. He gave up one earned run.

Next up for the Creeks is their home opener against the St. Thomas Tomcats Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
