Creeks drop Kitchener to move to top of league

GUELPH – The Guelph Silvercreeks moved to the top of the Intercounty Baseball Association 22U standings with an 11-6 victory over the Kitchener Junior Panthers Wednesday night at Hastings Stadium.

Seven runs in the second inning put the Creeks ahead to stay.

Kitchener had opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning before the Creeks unleashed their seven-run output in the bottom of the inning. The Junior Panthers cut the gap to a pair of runs with four runs in the top of the fifth, but Guelph got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning and added two more runs in the sixth. Kitchener scored its final run in the seventh while the Creeks wrapped up the scoring with a run in the eighth.

The Creeks clouted eight hits in the game and committed two errors while Kitchener had six hits and three errors.

Jason Boulanger was the winning pitcher for the locals while Ryan Kush kept the Junior Panthers without a hit during the three innings he pitched. He had four strikeouts.

At the plate, Arthur Kowara went 2-for-4 with a solo homer while Jackson Wahl went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs. Ashton Patterson went 1-for-3, scored two runs and stole two bases while Brando Leroux scored a run and drove in two.

The Creeks lead the eight-team league with a 4-1-1 record while Kitchener is second at 4-2-0. They’re followed by the Waterloo Tigers (3-2-1), Stratford Nationals (3-3-1), St. Thomas Tomcats (3-2-0), Brantford Junior Red Sox (3-4-0), Welland Junior Jackfish (1-3-1) and Hamilton Junior Cardinals (0-4-0).

Wednesday’s game was the first of five consecutive home outings in league play for the Creeks as they’re to host Stratford June 8 at 7:30 p.m., Welland June 12 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and Stratford again June 15 at 7:30 p.m.
