Creeks’ first loss is mercy-rule setback to Brantford

GUELPH – Guelph Silvercreeks yielded a pair of seven-run innings as they suffered an 18-8 loss to the Brantford Junior Red Sox in Intercounty Baseball Association 22U play Wednesday night at Hastings Stadium.

The Creeks were seven runs behind before they sent a batter to the plate as the Junior Red Sox scored seven runs in the top of the first inning.

The Creeks scored three runs in the bottom of the first before a pair of scoreless innings. Brantford added three runs in the top of the fourth and the Creeks got two of them back in the bottom of the inning.

The fifth inning was the same as the first with Brantford scoring seven runs in the top of the inning and Guelph getting three in the bottom of the inning.

The Junior Red Sox added a run in the top of the sixth that proved to be the final run of the match. The game was called at the end of the seventh inning due to the league’s 10-run mercy rule.

The Creeks had 11 hits and left nine on base while Brantford had 21 hits and stranded 10. Both teams committed two errors.

Aiden Mendonza went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs for the Creeks while Jackson Wahl went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk and Owen Ellis went 1-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases.

Justin Philp yielded two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. He had a strikeout.

Judah McArthur kept Brantford to an earned run in his two innings of work. He had three strikeouts.

The loss was the first of the season for the Creeks and leaves them at 2-1-0 while Brantford leads the league at 3-0-0.

The game was the first of three in four days on the Guelph squad’s schedule. They’re to play the Stratford Nationals (0-1-0) at Stratford Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Welland Junior Jackfish (2-0-1) at Welland Saturday at 7 p.m.
