Creeks up early, but finish doubled by Burlington
GUELPH – The Guelph Silvercreeks couldn’t hold on to the momentum they gained early in their COBA Junior baseball league game as they were doubled 12-6 by the Burlington Bulls Wednesday night at Hastings Stadium.
After Burlington scored single runs in the first and second innings, the Creeks responded with two in the bottom of the second to tie the score and four in the third to shoot ahead.
However, the Bulls weren’t done. They got a run back in the fifth and tied it with three runs in the sixth. Burlington added the six-run difference in the seventh.
Garrett Morgan started for the Creeks and was relieved by Craig Carscadden who in turn was relieved by Jayce MacKenzie. They yielded 12 hits and had seven strikeouts and issued five walks.
For the Creeks, Graham Wilmot and Ryan Malyk hit run-scoring singles in the second inning and Blaise Shaw and Cody Graham hit run-scoring doubles in the third.
The Creeks connected for nine hits in the game as Graham and Wilmot each had a double and a single and Shaw had his double. Getting one single apiece were Lucas Smit, Scott Seifried, Trystan Dennie and Malyk.
The loss put an end to Guelph’s two-game winning streak and it extends the Creeks’ home losing streak as they’ve dropped all four of their home games this season.
The Creeks are 4-7 in league play, tied with the Mississauga Southwest Twins for fifth in the 10-team league. Burlington is third at 5-1.
The Creeks are to play the 10th-place Mississauga North Two Panthers (0-5) Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Rivergrove Park and host the league-leading Mississauga North One Panthers (6-0) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
