Crusaders get rid of rust to run away from Falcons

GUELPH – It took the Lourdes Crusaders a quarter to shake off the rust from two weeks away from District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball play, but once they did they left the Centre Wellington Falcons behind.

The Crusaders toppled the Falcons 76-30 as the league resumed play Monday following its break for exams.

Host Lourdes was up 21-12 at the end of the first quarter before asserting their dominance in the second quarter as they ran to a 43-15 lead at halftime. The Crusaders added to their lead in the third quarter to carry a 64-24 advantage into the final quarter.

Lourdes used its long-range shooting to gain control as the Crusaders drained nine three-pointers in the game, four of them in the opening quarter.

Dom Favaro, who hit four three-pointers in the match, led the Crusaders with 25 points with all but four of the points coming in the first half. Simon Porcellato added 17 while Joey Basciano had 13 and Abraham Omot netted nine.

Gabe LeClair led Centre Wellington with eight points while Quin Francis collected six and Zach Taylor and Deklan Walker each had five.

Ross Royals, who dropped the Orangeville Bears 87-23 in Monday’s other game, lead the league at a perfect 11-0. The Crusaders are second at 9-2 while the Centennial Spartans and Bishop Macdonell Celtics are tied for third at 8-3. Those four teams will host quarter-final playoff games next week.

Trailing in the standings are the St. James Lions and Guelph CVI Green Gaels both at 3-8 and Centre Wellington and Orangeville both at 1-10.

All teams in the league have three games remaining this week as all are slated to play Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
