
Crusaders get third-place finish in senior volleyball
GUELPH – The Lourdes Crusaders claimed a third-place finish in the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball standings after edging the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 3-2 in league play at GCVI Thursday.
The win lifted Lourdes to 5-5 on the season. They finished behind the Centennial Spartans and Ross Royals who both had 9-1 records. Centennial gets first by winning the tiebreaker. The Centre Wellington Falcons finished fourth at 4-6 while the Bishop Macdonell Celtics finish fifth at 2-8 and GCVI finishes sixth at 1-9.
Lourdes won Thursday’s game 25-11, 17-25, 24-26, 25-13, 15-5.
In the only other senior match Thursday, Ross swept Bishop Mac 3-0. The Royals prevailed 25-17, 25-20, 25-18.
Centennial and Ross are to get byes in the quarter-finals and are to host semifinal matches.
Centre Wellington is to host Bishop Mac in one of the quarter-finals while Lourdes and GCVI are to play again in the quarter-finals, this time at Lourdes.
The quarter-finals are scheduled for Monday at 4 p.m. while the semifinals are slated for Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The final is scheduled for Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
All those times and dates are tentative due to the labour issues at the schools.
Junior Boys’ Volleyball
The Guelph CVI Green Gaels swept the Lourdes Crusaders 3-0 Thursday on the final day of the regular season while the Centre Wellington Falcons defeated the Orangeville Bears 3-1.
At GCVI, the hosts scored three consecutive 25-19 set wins.
In Orangeville, the Falcons prevailed 26-28, 25-21, 25-14, 25-16.
Centennial Spartans finished first at 9-1 and were followed in order by the Ross Royals at 7-3, Orangeville at 6-4, Centre Wellington at 5-5, GCVI at 3-7 and Lourdes at 0-10.
As in the senior league, Centennial and Ross are to get byes in the quarter-finals and are to host semifinal matches.
Pairings in the quarter-finals have GCVI playing at Centre Wellington and Lourdes playing at Orangeville.
