Custodio tosses gem as Royals knock off Welland

GUELPH – The word on starter Claudio Custodio of the Guelph Royals is that he strikes out a lot of batters, doesn’t allow too many hits and doesn’t yield too many walks, either.

All were certainly true Tuesday night at Hastings Stadium as the Royals became the first team to beat the Welland Jackfish in Intercounty Baseball League play this season.

Custodio picked up the win as he had 11 strikeouts and yielded two runs, one earned, off two hits and two walks in seven innings. The Royals are 3-3 on the season and Custodio is 2-0 with a league-high 34 strikeouts. He’s surrendered six hits and three walks in 20 2/3 innings and has a 1.31 earned-run average.

Tuesday, the Royals had the same number of hits in the first inning as the Jackfish had the entire game – five. With one out, Brando Leroux was hit by a pitch. He went to third on a single by Sean Reilly and scored on a single by Josh Garton. Malik Collymore singled to load the bases and Noah Roberts singled to score two. An out later, Darius Barlas singled in the fourth run of the inning, an inning that saw the hosts send all nine batters in the order to the plate.

Welland got a run back in the top of the second before the Royals got that one back in the bottom of the inning. Again with one out, Leroux was hit by a pitch, leaving him to wonder what he did to Welland starter and former Royal Brett Lawson to lead to two plunking in two plate appearances. Leroux went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Reilly double.

The Royals scored another four runs in the fourth as Reilly singled home a run and Garton connected for his third homer of the season to drive in two more. Collymore doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball.

While the Royals were finished with their scoring then, the Jackfish weren’t. Welland showed last weekend that it can’t be counted out of any game as the Jackfish rallied from a nine-run deficit after five and a half innings to edge the Toronto Maple Leafs 10-9.

Tuesday, the visitors got an unearned run off Custodio in the sixth and then scored two earned runs off reliever Daniel Marquez in the eighth. He faced seven batters in the inning, threw 25 pitches and gave up the runs off two hits and two walks. He had a strikeout.

Emilis Guerrero pitched the ninth and held Welland to an earned run. Hogan Brown started the inning with a single, went to second on a passed ball, to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout. The game ended when Guerrero struck out Tyler Dupuis.

The Royals connected for 15 hits in the game as Garton was a perfect 4-for-4 with a homer and three singles. Reilly had a double and two singles while Collymore had a double and a single and Ethan Hammond had two singles. Getting one single apiece were J.D. Williams, Roberts, Barlas and Ashton Patterson.

The Jackfish used three pitchers. Lawson was pulled after Garton’s homer as he gave up eight earned runs off 10 hits. He had two strikeouts and didn’t walk anyone. Casey Bouillere-Howard worked 3 2/3 innings and Michael Bonaccorso pitched one. Bouillere-Howard gave up a run off four hits and two walks while Bonaccorso pitched a scoreless inning, although he yielded a hit and two walks. Bouillere-Howard had three striekouts and Bonaccorso had two.

The Jackfish lead the league at 5-1 and are followed by the London Majors (4-1), Barrie Baycats (4-2), Royals (3-3), Kitchener Panthers (2-2), Hamilton Cardinals (2-3), Toronto (2-4) and Brantford Red Sox (0-6).

After playing six games in 10 days, the Royals get a bit of a break until starting a stretch of six games in 11 days with a home game against the Kitchener Saturday. Game time at Hastings Stadium is 1 p.m.

The Royals are to play the Toronto Maple Leafs at Christie Pits Sunday at 2 p.m. The Leafs are the only team in the league the Royals have yet to play thanks to their rainout (or treeout) in their scheduled home opener May 21 against the Leafs. That game has yet to be rescheduled.
