CWOSSA volleyball: Lions silver medalists in AA senior tourney
SIMCOE – The St. James Lions finished as silver medalists at the CWOSSA high school AA senior girls’ volleyball championship tournament at Simcoe Composite School Thursday.
The Lions had finished second in their pool following Wednesday’s preliminary round with two wins and a loss.
St. James defeated Holy Trinity 25-11, 25-14 and Grey Highlands 25-13, 25-19 and lost 25-21, 25-22 to Preston.
Norwell Varsity Reds of Palmerston finished first in the other pool with three wins as the Varsity Reds defeated Monsignor Doyle 25-21, 25-16, Sacred Heart 25-21, 26-28, 15-8 and Paris 25-16, 25-16.
The Lions and Varsity Reds met in the semifinals with the Lions winning 25-13, 25-13.
St. James got a rematch with Preston in the final and Preston won 27-25, 15-25, 25-21, 25-21.
Bishop Macdonell Celtics and Norwell Varsity Reds both saw their tournament play end after preliminary pool play.
Bishop Mac had a win and two losses as the Celtics defeated Grey Highlands 25-17, 25-14 and lost 25-16, 25-23 to Holy Trinity and 23-25, 25-10, 15-9 to Galt.
Norwell went winless in the other pool as the Varsity Reds were topped 25-8, 25-9 by St. David, 25-11, 25-12 by Sacred Heart and 25-19, 25-16 by Paris.
Galt won the title with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-22 sweep of Holy Trinity.
The Guelph CVI Green Gaels reached the semifinals before bowing out of the CWOSSA high school AAA senior girls’ volleyball championship tournament at Kitchener’s Forest Heights Thursday.
The Gaels finished second in their pool with a win and a loss as they defeated Owen Sound 25-14, 25-15, but fell 25-19, 25-14 to Forest Heights.
That record put the Gaels into the semifinals and gave them a match against the first-place team in the other pool, Cameron Heights.
Cameron Heights won a pair of close sets 25-23, 28-26 to gain a berth in the final against Forest Heights.
Forest Heights took the title and gained a berth in the OFSAA provincial high school championship tournament with a 3-0 win. Forest Heights won the sets 25-14, 25-17, 25-21.
The Ross Royals also reached the semifinals before being knocked out of their tournament.
The Royals went 1-1 in pool play as they defeated Owen Sound 25-15, 25-10 and lost to Sir John A Macdonald 25-20, 25-19.
Ross was handed a 25-8, 25-6 loss by Waterloo CI in the semifinal.
Waterloo CI also won the final 25-8, 25-18, 25-11 over Sir John A Macdonald.
The season for the Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest came to an end following preliminary round-robin play in the tournament at Walkerton.
The Wolverines dropped all three of their matches as they were downed 23-25, 25-18, 15-12 by Delhi, 26-24, 25-18 by Walkerton and 25-18, 25-21 by Pere Rene De Galinee.
Pere Rene De Galinee won the championship match 25-14, 26-24, 25-18 over Delhi.
Erin Raiders reached the semifinals after posting a win and a loss in preliminary pool play.
The Raiders defeated Georgian Bay 25-16, 25-13 and lost 25-18, 25-8 to Valley Heights in pool play.
In the semifinals, Erin fell 25-9, 25-16 to Woodland Christian.
Woodland Christian claimed the title with a 25-16, 25-16 win over Valley Heights.
