Davison’s hat trick lifts Gryphon hockey women to top spot

OSHAWA – Sydney Davison connected for a natural hat trick as she helped the Guelph Gryphons move to the top spot in the OUA women’s hockey league standings with a 7-3 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks Friday at the UOIT Campus Ice Centre.

UOIT scored first, but Davison responded with her three consecutive goals to put the Gryphs ahead for good.

Guelph led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 5-2 after the second.

While Davison had her hat trick, single goals were added by Stephanie Gava, Claire Merrick, Mallory Young and Katie Mikkelsen. Davison also had an assist as did Laura Crowdis, Kristen Jay and Lauren Ianni.

Erin Ross, Sarah Biesenthal and Nicole Zabel scored for UOIT. Kassidy Nauboris set up two of the goals and Katie Heath, Jillian Banks and Mariah Wilson each had one assist.

The Gryphs outshot the Ridgebacks 36-27, but were scoreless on two power plays while UOIT went 1-for-2 on their power play.

Aurore Beaulieu had 24 saves for the win in net for the Gryphs while starting netminder Brooke Vail took the loss. She also stopped 24 shots while Briar Hughes was in net for the third period and had five saves.

The win was the third in a row for the Gryphs and lifts them into first place at 8-2-1-1. UOIT is eighth at 6-7-0-1.

The Gryphs are to play the fifth-place Queen’s Gaels (8-5-0-0) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
