Dunne’s saves in shootout help Rocks silence Thunder
ELORA – Goaltender Colin Dunne stopped all three shooters in overtime to help the Elora Rocks edge the Tillsonburg Thunder 5-4 in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league play Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.
The teams had battled evenly throughout the contest as they were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Tillsonburg led 4-3 at the end of the second. Elora pulled even with just over five minutes to go in the third and a five-minute four-on-four overtime period failed to produce any scoring.
While Tillsonburg’s three shooters were each stopped in the shootout, Elora captain Spencer Goulay fired in the winner. He was Elora’s second shooter.
Trevor Lord, Brock West, Ed Gaffney and Sam Bilton each scored a goal in regulation time for the Rocks while Lyam Cripps had three assists and Kris Dobinson, Bilton and Ryan Maksymyk each had one.
Tillsonburg’s goals were scored by Scott Stafford, Zach Vanlouwe, Braden Roberts and Travis Lisabeth while Kevin Hu had two assists and Roberts, Mike Findlay, Andrew Tapsell and Stafford had one apiece.
The Rocks had the advantage in territorial play during regulation time as they outshot the Thunder 46-24. The teams had four shots apiece in the overtime period.
Dunn made 24 saves to get the win in net for the Rocks while Tommy Lee had 46 saves for Tillsonburg.
With the win the Rocks move into a tie with the Minto 81’s for ninth place with identical 7-7-0-1 records. They’re a point behind the eighth-place Tavistock Royals (7-7-0-2). Top eight qualify for the top tier of the playoffs.
Tillsonburg is sixth at 9-5-0-1.
The Rocks are to play the fourth-place Saugeen Shores Winterhawks (12-3-1-0) at the Port Elgin Sportsplex Saturday at 7 p.m.
