Eagles gain playoff berth with senior hoops’ win

FERGUS – The Emmanuel Christian Eagles posted a surprise on the final day of the District 4 high school senior boys’ basketball league’s regular season.

The Eagles collected their second win of the season as they edged the Westside Thunder 41-38.

The win secured a playoff berth for the Eagles as they finish fourth at 2-6 while the Norwell Varsity Reds were fifth at 1-7.

Centre Dufferin Royals were first at 8-0 while Westside was second at 5-3 and Wellington Heights Wolverines third at 4-4.

Brayden Taekema led the Eagles with 18 points while Jason Westrik added seven.

Michael Panter-Hough had 17 for Westside and Michael Horvath netted nine.

The semifinals are set for next Wednesday with Westside hosting Wellington Heights and Emmanuel Christian playing at Centre Dufferin.

Neither of the top two teams faltered Wednesday as the Centre Dufferin Royals downed the Wellington Heights Wolverines 76-49 and the Erin Raiders defeated the Emmanuel Christian Eagles 51-43.

Centre Dufferin and Erin tied for first at 7-1 while Wellington Heights was third at 4-4, Norwell Varsity Reds fourth at 2-6 and Emmanuel Christian fifth at 0-8.

The Royals and Raiders split their regular-season games, but Centre Dufferin won the tie-breaker by winning their game against Erin by 11 points and lost to the Raiders by five.

Semifinals are to go Wednesday. Centre Dufferin is to play Norwell and Wellington Heights and Erin are to clash in the other match.

Thomas Moore led Centre Dufferin with 16 points while Jaden Hamilton-El had 14.

Brody LeBlanc collected 15 for Wellington Heights and Ethan Andrews followed with 11.


Erin 51 Emmanuel Christian 43

Ryan St. Denis connected for 23 points for Erin while Colden Reay had nine.

Aaron Vanleeuwen hit for 11 for Emmanuel Christian and Wade VanEerde added eight.
