Elora Mohawks connect to down Guelph Regals

FERGUS – The Elora Mohawks grabbed a four-goal lead in the opening period and won by that gap as they handed the Guelph Regals a 12-8 setback in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Wednesday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Mohawks led 4-0 at the end of the first period and the teams traded goals the remainder of the way. Elora’s largest lead of five goals came in the second period and the Regals responded to that by cutting the margin between the teams to two goals with three minutes to go in the second, the closest they would get.

The Mohawks led 8-5 after the second period.

Jabe Verbeek had three goals and two assists for the Mohawks while Brinley Wilson had two goals and four assists, Tobias Wilson had two goals and two assists, J.J. Lavigne had two goals and an assist and Keegan Detweiler also scored twice. Carter Coffey had a goal and two assists and Aidan McDougall and Trae Verbeek each had an assist.

Marcus Keleher connected for six goals for the Regals while Dylan Goddard and Owen Orpana each had a goal. Orpana also had four assists while Goddard had two assists and Eric Snyder, Zak Holmes and Caelan Brady each had one assist.

The Mohawks outshot the Regals 50-36 while both teams had two power-play goals, Guelph on five power plays and Elora on eight.

Sam Forbes had 28 saves for Elora while Dante Mancini had 30 in the first two periods for the Regals and Ty Fox-Trudel had eight in the third.

The Mohawks and Regals are tied for second in the Western Conference standings, two points behind the undefeated Six Nations Rebels who have beaten both teams. Six Nations leads at 4-0-0 while Elora’s at 3-1-0 and Guelph’s at 3-2-0.

The Mohawks are to host the Owen Sound North Stars (1-1-0) Thursday at Fergus at 8 p.m. and the Point Edward Pacers (0-3-0) Sunday at 4 p.m.

The Regals are to play the Pacers at Point Edward Saturday at 4 p.m. and the Wallaceburg Red Devils (1-1-0) at Wallaceburg Sunday at 4 p.m.
