Elora Mohawks drop another game to Windsor

WINDSOR – The Windsor Clippers seem to have the Elora Mohawks’ number this Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League season.

The Mohawks have lost twice the entire regular season with both losses being against Windsor.

Sunday, the host Clippers dropped the Mohawks 15-8 at Forest Glade Arena.

Windsor got off to a fast start, scoring the first five goals of the game. The Clippers also scored the first four goals of the second period.

Windsor led 7-3 at the end of the first period and 14-7 after the second.

The third period was a chippy affair with a total of 46 minutes in penalties assessed including an unsportsmanlike conduct misconduct to Elora’s Ethen Wellings and roughing majors to Brandon Coulter of Windsor and Matt Allen of the Mohawks. The other 26 minutes were all minors. There had been nine minors called in the first two periods combined.

Chris Rathwell and Nick Aitchison each had hat tricks for the Mohawks while Owen Moore and Brett Harrison added one goal apiece. Sam Dramnitzke collected three assists while Jabe Verbeek had two and Ethan Broderick, Rathwell, Wellings and Aitchison each had one.

Josh Rosa scored four times for Windsor while Kaden Brennan had a hat trick and Nathan DeThomasis and Xander Derkatz tallied twice each. Malikye Good, Coulter, Zane Dalpe and Connor McManus added single goals.

The Clippers outshot the Mohawks 50-35 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while Elora was scoreless on eight power plays.

Nathan Whittom started in net for Elora, but was replaced by Carter Billings at 1:17 of the second period following Windsor’s ninth goal. Whittom had 27 saves and Billings had eight.

Chase Cosgrove had 27 saves for the hosts.

The game helped tighten up the scoring race. Elora’s Harrison (41 goals-47 assists) and Jared Downey (25-63) of the Nepean Knights are tied for the lead at 88 points while Dalpe (49-38) of Windsor is third at 87 and Dramnitzke (32-53) of the Mohawks is fourth at 85.

In their last two games, Harrison has been held to a total of two goals while Downey has three goals and three assists, Dalpe has five goals and five assists and Dramnitzke has one goal and six assists.

The Mohawks (15-2-0) lead the Western Conference while the Clippers, St. Catharines Athletics and Hamilton Bengals are tied for second at 14-4-0. Those four will finish in the top four and have home-court advantage in their first-round playoff series.

Guelph Regals (11-7-0) are fifth and are followed by the Six Nations Rebels (9-7-1), Owen Sound North Stars (6-10-1), Wallaceburg Red Devils (6-11-0), Point Edward Pacers (4-14-0), Welland Generals (2-15-0) and London Blue Devils (0-17-0). Top seven have clinched playoff berths while Welland and London have been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Mohawks are to finish their regular season with three games in four days as they’re to play at Hamilton Thursday at 8 p.m. and at St. Catharines Saturday at 7 p.m. and host Wallaceburg Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre. The game against Wallaceburg could be a playoff preview as the Mohawks and Red Devils could be first-round opponents.
