Elora Mohawks jump ahead early in win over London

LONDON – The Elora Mohawks grabbed a five-goal lead in the first period on the way to a 13-9 victory over the London Blue Devils in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Sunday at London’s Nichols Recreation Centre.

The Mohawks led 6-1 at the end of the first period and 10-2 after the second. London narrowed the gap with seven goals in the third including five in a row.

Brinley Wilson hit for three goals and four assists for Elora while Jabe Verbeek had three goals and three assists and Carter Coffey and Keegan Detweiler each had two goals and two assists. Owen Moore had a goal and five assists while Connor Willmets had a goal and three assists and JJ Lavigne had a goal and two assists. Blake Harrison, Curtis Dietrich, Spencer Aitchison and goaltender Sam Forbes each had one assist.

Brendan Campbell collected four goals and two assists for London while Tyler Fletcher had two goals and five assists, Nate Doxtator had a goal and four assists, Tyson Currah had a goal and two assists and Connor Zavitz had a goal and an assist. Kyle Pizzey had three assists and Declan McEvoy had one assist.

Shots on net were not reported.

The Mohawks went 1-for-4 on their power play while London went 1-for-7.

Forbes picked up the win in net for the Mohawks while Harrison Kerr started in net for London and was replaced by Gavin Clarke 12 minutes into the game after Elora’s fifth goal.

Six Nations Rebels lead the Western Conference at 13-0-0 and are followed by the Mohawks at 11-2-0, Guelph Regals at 10-3-0, St. Catharines Athletics at 9-2-0, Windsor Clippers at 8-4-0, Hamilton Bengals at 8-5-0, Owen Sound North Stars 5-6-0, Cambridge Highlanders at 5-7-0, Wallaceburg Red Devils at 3-8-0, London at 1-11-0, Welland Generals at 0-12-0 and Point Edward Pacers at 0-13-0.

The Mohawks and Guelph Regals are to meet Wednesday at the Victoria Road arena. Game time is 8 p.m.
