Elora Mohawks leave Blue Devils way behind

LONDON – Not much doubt in this one.

After the host London Blue Devils scored in the opening minute of their Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League match with the Elora Mohawks Friday night at the Lambeth Arena, the Mohawks ran away with the game. At one point they scored 15 consecutive goals, including all 10 goals scored in the second period, as they claimed a 23-5 victory.

Elora led 6-4 at the end of the first period and 16-4 after the second.

Ethen Wellings led the Mohawks with five goals and eight assists while Nick Aitchison had five goals and three assists and Brett Harrison had four goals and four assists. Owen Moore followed with two goals and four assists while Matt Allen had two goals and three assists, Tobias Wilson had two goals and two assists, Jabe Verbeek and J.J. Swanston each had a goal and three assists, Owen Williams had a goal and Ryan Litt had an assist.

The output by Wellings gives him 41 points on the season including seven goals and 11 assists in three games with the Mohawks after being traded from the Welland Generals where he had 23 points in six games.

Harrison leads the league scoring race with 72 points (33 goals, 39 assists) in 12 games while teammate Sam Dramnitzke is second at 60 (21-39 in 11 games), Aitchison is seventh at 46 (29-17 in 9 games) and Wellings is tied for 10th.

Kaleb Fulkerson had a hat trick for London while Tyler Fletcher and Kyle Pizzy also scored.

The Mohawks outshot the Blue Devils 95-42 and went 5-for-10 on their power play while London went 2-for-7.

Nathan Whittom picked up the win in the Elora net with 37 saves while London’s Gavin Clarke had to be exhausted after making 72 saves.

Whittom leads the league’s goaltenders with a 4.41 goals-against average. He has a .872 save percentage and 7-1-0 record. Teammate Sam Hadley is fourth at 5.23 with an .811 save percentage and 4-0-0 record.

The Mohawks lead the Western Conference at 11-1-0 while the Blue Devils and Welland are tied for 10th in the 11-team division with 0-11-0 records.

The Mohawks are to host the Hamilton Bengals in the second game of a junior lacrosse doubleheader Sunday at the Elora and District Community Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Fergus Thistles and Orangeville Northmen of the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League are to meet in the first game of that doubleheader at 3 p.m.
