Elora Mohawks leave Cambridge behind in series opener

A four-goal spree in the first period sparked the Elora Mohawks to a 17-8 victory over the Cambridge Highlanders in the opening game of their Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League Western Conference semifinal playoff series Friday night at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.

The four-goal outburst broke a 2-2 tie and helped put the Mohawks up 6-3 at the end of the first period. They stretched the advantage to 13-6 by the end of the second.

Evan McDougall connected for four goals and five assists for Elora while Cole Hunsberger had two goals and six assists and Brinley Wilson had three goals and three assists. Nate Renaud and Keegan Detweiler both had two goals and two assists while JJ Lavigne and Connor Willmets each had two goals and an assist, Owen Moore had two assists and Owen Tovell, Terrance Barrina, Brock Redwood, Mark McIntosh, Cole Doherty and Kale Couvillon each had one assist.

Korbyn Haupert, Brody McGivern and Lukas Kucera scored twice apiece for Cambridge while Tyler Francis-Renner and Dylan Gillespie each had one goal. McGivern and Francis-Renner collected four assists apiece while Drake Neal had three assists and Haupert, Gillespie and Matthew Nunnaro each had one assist.

The Mohawks outshot the Highlanders 70-29.

Elora had three power-play goals and one shorthanded goal while Cambridge had two power-play goals.

Sam Forbes had 21 saves for the Mohawks. Taylum Sandy had 28 saves for the Highlanders before being replaced by Gavin Clarke at 14:04 of the second period. Clarke had 25 saves during his stint.

The Mohawks had finished in second place in the Western Conference at 17-1-1-1 (W-L-T-OTL) while Cambridge was third at 14-6-0-0.

In the conference quarterfinals, Elora swept the Guelph Regals 3-0 while Cambridge outlasted the Six Nations Rebels 3-2.

Second game of the conference semifinal is scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. at Cambridge’s Galt Gardens Arena while Game 3 is to go in Elora Wednesday at 8 p.m.
