
Elora Mohawks leave Welland Generals way behind
ELORA – If not for the final two seconds of the opening period, the Elora Mohawks would’ve recorded a shutout in their Ontario junior B lacrosse league home opener Sunday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.
Not that the goal they surrendered made any difference in the game as the Mohawks pummeled the Welland Generals 21-1.

The Mohawks struck for six goals in the first period and 12 in the second. They also went 9-for-16 on their power play and had a shorthanded goal. Welland was scoreless on both of its power plays.
Welland was whistled for 83 minutes in penalties, 50 more than the Mohawks. Welland’s penalties included two unsportsmanlike conduct misconducts, a high sticking game misconduct, a facemask major, two high sticking majors and two fighting majors. Elora’s penalties included an unsportsmanlike conduct misconduct, a facemask major and two fighting majors.
Nick Aitchison connected for four goals for Elora while Jayden Bushey, Sam Dramnitzke, Jabe Verbeek, Tobias Wilson, Brett Harrison and Matt Allen tallied twice each. Adding one goal apiece were Ryan Litt, Mark McIntosh, Owen Moore, Kyle Detweiller and Jake Bauman. Dramnitzke had seven assists while Verbeek, Wilson and Harrison had four apiece, Bushey had three, Aitchison, Moore and Allen had two each and Litt and Detweiller had one apiece.
Billy Dale had an unassisted goal for Welland.
The Mohawks outshot Welland 59-15.
Nathan Whittom had 14 saves in the Elora net while Hunter Berry and Sagoyehdehs Hill split the goaltending chores for Welland. Berry started and yielded 10 goals on 33 shots in the first 28 minutes of the game while Hill relieved and gave up 11 goals on 26 shots the rest of the way.
The Mohawks (2-0-0) are to play a pair of home games next weekend as they’re to host the Owen Sound North Stars Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Point Edward Pacers Sunday at 7 p.m. Both games will be season openers for the visitors.
