Elora Mohawks nipped by Hamilton in series opener

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks surrendered the game’s final two goals as the Hamilton Bengals opened the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League Western Conference semifinal with an 11-9 win in a sweltering Elora and District Community Centre Friday night.

Hamilton broke a tie about six and a half minutes into the third period and added the game’s final goal four minutes later. The Bengals had opened the game with three goals in the first three minutes.

Elora responded with five in a row before Hamilton did the same. After the teams traded goals, the hosts netted three in a row to pull even at 5:08 of the third.

The teams had been tied 5-5 at the end of the first period and Hamilton led 9-7 after the second.

Zack Cameron had a hat trick for the Mohawks while Sam Dramnitzke scored twice and Logan Cameron, Tyler Healey, Nathan Bolger and Trent Spear added single goals. Dean Sealey collected five assists while Logan Cameron and Ryan Mueller had three apiece and Dramnitzke and Hyatt Welsh had one each.

Braedon Saris had three goals and two assists for Hamilton while Ty English, Luke Robinson and Jacob Parkinson netted two goals apiece. Single goals were added by Tye Argent and Dawson Brown while Argent had four assists and Brown, Hunter Aggus, Yvon Bolduc and Coltrane Tyson each had two. Single assists were awarded to English, Robinson, Lucas Nagy, Brenden Boyle, Tyson Allison and Aaron Underwood.

Hamilton outshot the Mohawks 53-51 while Elora went 2-for-7 on its power play and held Hamilton scoreless on three power plays.

Ryan Fitzgerald was tagged with the loss in the Elora net. Both goaltenders, Fitzgerald and Hamilton’s Lucas Nagy, had 42 saves.

That the game was a close one shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone. Elora had finished second in the conference at 16-3-1 while Hamilton was third, two points behind at 15-4-1.

Their two regular-season meetings early in June both ended with 12-11 scores with both games being decided in overtime. The Mohawks won in Hamilton June 6 and the Bengals won in Elora three days later.

Second game of the best-of-five Yellow Bucket Series (the teams wear uniforms that are very similar to each other’s and both also wear yellow helmets) is to be played at Hamilton’s Andreychuk arena Tuesday. Game time is 8 p.m.

The third game is to go Wednesday at Elora starting at 8 p.m.
