Elora Mohawks rally to claim win in series opener

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks scored the final four goals of the game to rally for a 12-9 victory over the St. Catharines Athletics in the opening game of their best-of-five Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League’s Western Conference semifinal playoff series Friday night at the Elora Community Centre.

The teams were tied 3-3 at the end of the first period and St. Catharines led 7-6 at the end of the second period. The Athletics grabbed a 9-8 lead at 5:16 of the third, but were held scoreless the remainder of the game.

Sam Dramnitzke and Brett Harrison each had a hat trick for the Mohawks while Chris Rathwell scored twice and Jayden Bushey, Jabe Verbeek, Nick Aitchison and Mark McIntosh added single goals. Ethen Wellings assisted on eight of the goals while Bushey and Dramnitzke each had three assists. Tobias Wilson and Harrison had two assists apiece while Matt Allen had one assist.

Christian Lefeuvre struck for two goals for St. Catharines while Ryan Andrews, Jack Perker, Jaden Patterson, Liam Dietsch, Max Brook, Ian Kohut and Justin Porga each had one.

Elora outshot the Athletics 70-46 and went 2-for-4 on their power play while St. Catharines went 1-for-4.

Nathan Whittom started and went 30:27 before giving way to Cecil Jacobs who picked up the victory. Whittom had 18 saves while Jacobs had 19.

Mike Napoli played all but the final 5:19 of the game in net for St. Catharines when Connor Waller took over. Napoli had 53 saves while Waller had five.

Second game of the series is to go Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Canada Games arena in St. Catharines.
