Elora Mohawks sweep Guelph Regals aside

A pair of power-play goals in the final six minutes of the game helped the Elora Mohawks secure a game and series victory over the Guelph Regals in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League playoff action Wednesday at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.

The Mohawks won the game 11-7 to sweep the best-of-five West Division quarter-final series in three games.

Elora had taken the opening game of the series 14-2 in Elora Friday and the second game 11-3 at the Victoria Road arena Sunday.

The Mohawks had finished the regular season second in the division at 17-1-1-1 (W-L-T-OTL) while the Regals were seventh at 9-9-0-2.

While the Mohawks had a few scoring outbursts in the previous games of the series, the Regals held them to no more than two goals in a row Wednesday. While Guelph never led in the game, the teams were tied 4-4 at the end of the first period and Elora was up 8-6 by the end of the second.

League regular-season scoring champion Brinley Wilson had a hat trick for Elora while JJ Lavigne and Connor Willmets added two goals apiece and Evan McDougall, Mark McIntosh, Owen Moore and Keegan Detweiler added single goals. Lavigne had four assists while Owen Tovell, Moore, Detweiler and Willmets each had two. Single assists were awarded to Evan McDougall, Tobias Wilson, Jabe Verbeek and Brinley Wilson.

Brett Vince had a hat trick for Guelph while Dylan Goddard, Finn Morgan, Tyler Beecraft and Sam Savery collected single goals. Graeme Crowder set up three goals while Dylan Davey had two assists and Beecraft and Savery each had one.

The Mohawks outshot the Regals 53-36 and had three power-play goals while the Regals had one.

Sam Forbes had nine saves in the first period for Elora while Jesse Morrison had 20 in the final two periods. Anthony Fonte had 42 in the entire game for the Regals.
