Elora Rocks clout Erin Blitz to start 2023 games

ELORA – The Elora Rocks opened the 2023 portion of their WOSHL season with an 8-1 victory over the Erin Blitz Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

It was the fourth victory this season for the defending champion Rocks over the expansion Blitz. Elora’s outscored Erin 35-6 in those games.

Friday, Elora led 6-1 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second.

Zack Cameron scored twice for the Rocks while single goals were added by Steven Dol, Brendan Woods, Chad Herron, Tye Campbell, Brett McInall and Alex Uttley. Spencer Gourlay and Brett McInall each had three assists while Herron and Zac McInall had two apiece. Single assists were awarded to Shaun Pickering, Woods, Andrew Brubacher, Luke Hoelscher and Cameron.

Hayden Ireland scored the lone goal for Erin midway through the first period. Pierre-Luc Forget and Sean Caruso assisted on the goal.

The Rocks outshot the Blitz 48-32 and went 1-for-4 on their power play while Erin was scoreless on three power plays.

Colin Dunne had 31 saves for Elora while Brayden Kelso had 40 for Erin.

Tilbury Bluebirds lead the league at 14-2-0 while the Tillsonburg Thunder (11-1-0) and Rocks (10-4-2) are tied for second, although Tillsonburg has four games in hand. They’re followed by the Stratford Fighting Irish (10-3-0), Strathroy Jets (9-7-0), Plattsville Lakers (5-10-0), Alvinston Killer Bees (4-11-1), Erin (2-11-1) and Delhi Flames (2-13-1).

Next game for the Rocks is next Friday when they’re to host Plattsville at 8:30 p.m.

The Blitz are to host Plattsville Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Centre 2000 arena in Erin.
