Elora Rocks connect in second to stymie Stratford again
ELORA – Five goals in the second period powered the Elora Rocks to an 8-5 victory over the Stratford Fighting Irish in their Western Ontario Super Hockey League home opener Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.
The Rocks trailed 2-1 at the end of the first period, but shot ahead for good with a pair of goals in the first four and a half minutes of the middle frame.

The locals extended their lead to 6-3 by the end of the second before the teams scored twice apiece in the third.
Matteo Condotta had a five-point night for the Rocks as he scored two goals and assisted on three others. Following with a goal apiece were Luke Baleshta, Shaun Pickering, Klayton Hoelscher, Spencer Maccormack, Jacob Black and Steven Dol. Tye Campbell and Michael Giacometti each had two assists while Alex Utley, Pickering, Aaron Smith, Mark Hamilton and Trevor Lord each had one assist.
Ray Robbins had a pair of goals for the Fighting Irish while single goals were added by Sean O’Brien, Brett Denny and Maverick Petrie. Dawson Winchester assisted on two of the goals while single helpers were awarded to Clayton Lewis, Robbins, Hayden Broomhead , Petrie, Mitchell Casey, Denny and Tyler Arseneault.
Colin Dunne was the winning netminder for the Rocks while Nathan Torchia took the loss in net for Stratford.
The win was the second over the Fighting Irish in less than a week for the Rocks as they had won 4-2 in Stratford last Saturday.
The Rocks are tied for the lead league with the Strathroy Jets as both teams have 3-0-0-0 records. Tillsonburg Thunder are third at 1-1-0-0 while Stratford and the Alvinston Killer Bees are tied at 0-3-0-0.
Friday’s game was the first of seven consecutive home matches for the Rocks. They’re to host Tillsonburg Friday at 8:30 p.m.
