Elora Rocks drop another one to Fighting Irish

ELORA – The Elora Rocks suffered their second consecutive loss to the Stratford Fighting Irish when they were defeated 6-4 in WOSHL play Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The loss was also the fourth in five games for the defending league champions.

The Rocks led 3-2 after the first period before Stratford shot ahead 4-3 by the end of the second. Elora tied it in the third before Steven Degroot tallied twice in the final five and a half minutes of the game for the win for the Fighting Irish.

Alex Uttley had a pair of goals for Elora while Chad Herron and Zack Cameron also scored. Charlie Stephens and Brett McInall had two assists apiece while single assists went to Cameron, Matteo Condotta, Tye Campbell and Danny Heath.

Degroot’s third-period goals gave him a hat trick in the game while Graham Brulotte scored twice and Branden Speziale had the other goal. Brody Smith had two assists while Matt Granger, Sean O’Brien, Matt Fuller and Cameron Stokes had one apiece.

Stratford outshot the Rocks 43-34.

Anthony Marshall had 37 saves for the Rocks while Darren Smith had 30 for Stratford.

The Rocks are second in the nine-team league at 8-3-0-1 while the Tillsonburg Thunder (8-1-0-0) and Stratford (8-2-0-0) are tied for third with both having games in hand on Elora. The Thunder have three games in hand on the Rocks and the Fighting Irish have two.

The Rocks are to host the Plattsville Lakers (4-8-0-0) Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
