Elora Rocks drop another to trail Stratford in semifinal

STRATFORD – The defending WOSHL champion Elora Rocks suffered their second loss to the Stratford Fighting Irish in as many days as the Fighting Irish won 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Stratford’s Allman Arena.

The games were the first two of their best-of-seven semifinal. Stratford won 3-2 at Fergus Friday night.

Saturday, Stratford had its five goals before the Rocks managed their first.

The Rocks scored power-play goals in the final minutes of the second and third periods. Brett McInall scored with 47 seconds to go in the second and Andrew Brubacher scored with 33 seconds to go in the third. Brubacher and Matteo Condotta each had an assist.

Matt Granger, Riley Coome, Cooper Leitch, Steven Degroot and Cameron Stokes collected a goal apiece for Stratford. Branden Speziale assisted on two of the goals while single helpers were registered by Degroot, Leitch, Brody Smith, Coome, Ray Robbins and Sean O’Brien.

The Fighting Irish dominated territorial play as they outshot the Rocks 45-22, holding Elora to less than 10 shots in each period.

Colin Dunne had 40 saves for the Rocks while Darren Smith had 20 for Stratford.

Third game of the series is set for Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus.

It’s the second consecutive season the Rocks and Fighting Irish have met in the semifinals. The Rocks swept Stratford in four games in last season’s semifinals when the league operated with five teams. It expanded to nine teams this season.
