Elora Rocks grab lead in second, hold on to edge 81’s

ELORA – The Elora Rocks hit for three goals in the second period and then held on during a late push by the Mapleton-Minto 81’s to score a 6-5 victory in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey play Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The 81’s scored the first three goals of the game before the Rocks came on. M-M led 3-2 at the end of the first period while Elora was up 5-3 at the end of the second.

The hosts extended their lead with just over five minutes to go in the third, but the 81’s narrowed the gap with two goals in the final two and a half minutes. Both were scored with the goaltender out for an extra skater.

Stevie Alvo led the Rocks with two goals and two assists while single goals were netted by Ed Gaffney, Graham Kitching, Santino Di Florio and Lyam Cripps. Brock West, Bradley Prosic, Corey Flemington, Chad Herron, Justin Byers and Shawn Lantz each had one assist.

Shayne Ross tallied twice for M-M while Jake Pleon, Tommy Hoogaars and Kyle Ellis scored once apiece. Brady Anderson collected two assists and Austin Gaboury, Adam Kawalec, Ellis and Mike Pleon each had one.

The 81’s outshot the Rocks 43-40. M-M went 3-for-6 on its power play while the Rocks went 2-for-5.

Austin Hoegy made 38 saves in the Elora net to get the win while Marc Williams was tagged with the loss. He stopped 34 shots.

The result leaves M-M fifth at 9-6-2-1 and Elora tied for eighth at 9-8-1-0.

Both teams are to play Saturday as the Rocks are to tangle with the second-place Ripley Wolves (15-3-1-0) at Ripley at 7 p.m. and the 81’s are to host the sixth-place Petrolia Squires (9-7-2-0) at the Palmerston arena at 7 p.m.
