Elora Rocks nipped in overtime by Durham Thundercats
DURHAM – The Durham Thundercats scored in overtime to edge the Elora Rocks 6-5 in WOAA senior men’s hockey league play Saturday night at the Durham arena.
The overtime goal capped a comeback by the Thundercats that saw them rally from a 3-1 deficit at the end of the first period. The score was tied 4-4 at the end of the second before the teams scored a goal apiece in the third, a goal by Elora’s Corey Flemington with 1:31 to go and the goalie out for an extra skater sending the game into overtime.
Kris Dobinson, Brett Coverdale, Justin Byers and Klayton Hoelscher scored the other goals for the Rocks while Andrew Whalen had two assists and Mark Rozak, Brendan Farrugia, Hoelscher, Flemington and Kevin Tuckey each had one assist.
Derek Matheson scored the overtime winner for Durham at 3:29 of the extra period. Kyler Nixon had recorded a hat trick in regulation time while Trevor Hughson and Justin Graham each had one assist. Jake Brown had four assists while Graham had three and Justin Graham (Durham), Mitch Good and Mitch Wright each had one.
The Thundercats outshot the Rocks 38-32 in regulation time and Durham went 1-for-3 on its power play while the Rocks were scoreless on four power plays.
Colin Dunne was charged with the overtime loss in net in his debut with the Rocks while Mathieu Ouellet picked up the win for Durham.
The Rocks (4-5-0-1) and Milverton 4-Wheel Drives (3-5-0-2) are tied for eighth in the 14-team league while Durham is seventh at 5-3-0-1.
The Rocks are to host the Clinton Radars (fourth at 7-4-0-0) Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
