Elora Rocks recover from slow start to drop Delhi

DELHI – After spotting the Delhi Flames a two-goal lead in the first period, the Elora Rocks came storming back to record a 14-2 victory in WOSHL play Saturday at the Delhi arena.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period before Elora rifled home seven goals in the second period and five more in the third. The second-period onslaught included four goals in a span of 2:43 in the final five minutes of the period.

Luke Hoelscher had four goals and an assist for the Rocks while Alex Uttley had three goals and two assists and Chad Herron had two goals and two assists. Brendan Woods, Nick Tetley, Mike Giacometti, Danny Heath and Yianni Skropolis also scored. Andrew Brubacher collected three assists while Woods, Nicholas Boehmer and Zack Cameron each had two and Spencer Gourlay, Spencer MacCormack, Matteo Condotta and Heath each had one.

Mike Stolar and Clay Donnelly had the goals for Delhi while Kelsey Vanymeren had the lone assist.

The defending champion Rocks outshot Delhi 39-25 including a 14-3 advantage in the third period.

Colin Dunne had 23 saves for the Rocks while Kodie Oudevshaar had 17 and Richard Little had eight (in the final 4:12 of the second period) for the Flames.

The Rocks went 1-for-4 on their power play and had a shorthanded goal while the Flames were scoreless on three power plays.

The win lifts the Rocks (17-4-0-2) into a tie for first place with the Stratford Fighting Irish (18-4-0-0). Stratford has a game in hand while the expansion Tilbury Bluebirds (17-4-0-1) are third, a point behind the leading deadlocked duo. Tilbury also has a game in hand on Elora.

The Rocks are to complete their regular season Friday when they’re to host the fourth-place Tillsonburg Thunder (14-6-0-0) at the Elora and District Community Centre. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
