Emmanuel Christian surprises in senior hoops semifinals

SHELBURNE – The Emmanuel Christian Eagles posted a semifinal surprise in District 4 high school senior girls’ basketball play Thursday when they edged the Centre Dufferin Royals 28-26 at Centre Dufferin.

The Royals had finished first thanks to winning a tie-breaker with the Westside Thunder after the two teams completed the regular season at 8-2. Emmanuel Christian was fourth at 4-6.

Centre Dufferin also took both regular-season games with the Eagles, winning 55-26 at Shelburne Sept. 26 and 38-26 at Fergus Oct. 17.

Thursday, Arielle Swaving and Janelle Vanleeuwen each had six points for Emmanuel Christian while Brooke Rutledge had nine and Laura Wagstaff added eight for Centre Dufferin.

The Eagles are to battle Westside in Tuesday’s final at Westside after the Thunder dropped the third-place Wellington Heights Wolverines 52-31 in the other semifinal.

Scoring leaders in that game were not reported.

Tuesday’s final at Westside is to start at 2:30 p.m.



There was no upset in the lone junior semifinal played Thursday as the Centre Dufferin Royals downed the Emmanuel Christian Eagles 53-13.

Franny McGowan had 15 points for Centre Dufferin while Tashlynn Jackson had eight.

Kottelenberg led Emmanuel Christian with four.

The Wellington Heights Wolverines won their semifinal over the Westside Thunder 27-20 at Mount Forest Wednesday.

Centre Dufferin won all eight of its regular-season games to finish first while Wellington Heights and Westside were both at 5-3 and Emmanuel Christian was fourth at 2-6.

The final Tuesday at Centre Dufferin is to start at 2:30 p.m.
