End of the road for Gryphon soccer women

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons saw their OUA women’s soccer season come to an end Wednesday when they dropped their quarterfinal match with the Queen’s Gaels 2-0 at Richardson Stadium.

The Gaels scored both their goals in the first seven minutes of the game to claim the win.

Jenna Matsukubo connected in the third minute and Jenna Leslie followed five seconds shy of the seven-minute mark to account for the scoring for the hosts. Both goals were set up by Hannah Melchiore.

Queen’s came out in a hurry in the first half and applied the pressure throughout, outshooting the locals 12-3 on the way to an 18-9 advantage in the category. The Gaels also had eight shots on target to six for the Gryphs.

The Gryphs did have their chances on corner kicks, taking seven while Queen’s took four.

Kirsten Tynan had the clean sheet for Queen’s.

The Gryphs had finished second in the West at 6-2-2 while Queen’s was second in the East at 8-2-0.

All home teams posted shutout wins in Wednesday’s quarterfinals as the Nipissing Lakers defeated the York Lions 1-0, Western Mustangs edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 1-0 and the Ottawa Gee-Gees disposed of the Ryerson Rams 2-0.

Saturday’s semifinals feature Queen’s at Ottawa and Western at Nipissing.

League final is set for Nov. 13.
