Erin Blitz knocked out of playoffs by Fighting Irish

ERIN – The Erin Blitz saw their inaugural season come to an end Sunday at Centre 2000 arena when they were tripled by the Stratford Fighting Irish.

Stratford scored four goals in the second period on their way to a 6-2 win in Game 4 of their best-of-five WOSHL quarter-final series that gave the Fighting Irish a 3-1 lead.

The Fighting Irish scored the only goal of the first period and led 5-1 after the second.

Joey Warywoda and Jacob Miller netted a goal apiece for the Blitz while Jordan Tutt, Joseph Franzin and Jeff White each had an assist.

Cameron Stokes, Graham Brulotte, Cooper Leitch, Sebastien Nogueira, Dylan Buckholz and Zachary Tierney scored the goals for Stratford. Ray Robbins and Stokes collected two assists apiece while single assists were awarded to Brulotte, Sean O’Brien, Mav Petrie and Brody Smith.

The Fighting Irish outshot Erin 28-25 and were a perfect 2-for-2 on their power play. The Blitz were 1-for-4 on their power play and they yielded a shorthanded goal.

Jacob Tugnutt had 10 saves for the Blitz in the first two periods while Brayden Kelso had 12 in the third period. Darren Smith had 23 saves in the game for Stratford.

Including the regular season and playoffs, the Blitz concluded their first season with 10 wins and 18 losses with two of the losses coming in overtime. They had lost each of their first eight games.

In another quarter-final match Sunday, the Tillsonburg Thunder dropped the Strathroy Jets 7-1 to post a 3-1 series victory.

Stratford and Tillsonburg join the Elora Rocks and Tilbury Bluebirds in the best-of-five semifinals. Those four teams finished the regular season in the top four with Tilbury (19-4-0-1) first, Elora (18-4-0-2) second, Stratford (18-6-0-0) third and Tillsonburg (17-7-0-0) fourth.

The Rocks are to face Stratford in one semifinal series while Tilbury and Tillsonburg are to meet in the others. Schedules have not been announced.
