Erin Blitz top Stratford to extend quarter-final series

STRATFORD – The Erin Blitz have survived to play again.

The Blitz scored the first three goals on their way to a 5-1 victory in their WOSHL quarter-final playoff game with the Stratford Fighting Irish Saturday at Stratford’s Allman arena. The win cut Stratford’s lead in the best-of-five series to 2-1.

Fourth game of the series is set for Sunday at 6 p.m. at Erin’s Centre 2000 arena.

Saturday, Mike Kri’s unassisted goal at 3:40 of the first period gave the Blitz a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

They extended it to 2-0 by the end of the period before the teams scored once apiece in the second. Erin clinched the win with a pair of goals 68 seconds apart in the final six minutes of the match.

Chris Prejet, Jacob Coulson, Maxwell Lightfoot and Jordan Tutt scored the other goals for Erin. It was Lightfoot’s second goal of the series, the first of the set for all the others. Liam Galton had a pair of assists while single assists were awarded to Lucas Schott, Beni Berisha, Lightfoot and Kri.

Matt Granger scored his first of the series for Stratford midway through the second period. Brody Smith assisted on the play.

The Fighting Irish outshot the Blitz 37-28 and both teams were scoreless on four power plays.

Jacob Tugnutt had 36 saves for Erin while Zack Weir had 23 for Stratford.

In another series Saturday, the Tilbury Bluebirds dropped the Plattsville Lakers 7-3 to sweep their series. They join the Elora Rocks as quarter-final victors. The Bluebirds and Rocks will have home-ice advantage in the best-of-five semifinals against yet to be determined opponents.

Tillsonburg Thunder and Strathroy Jets are to meet Sunday in the fourth game of their quarter-final series. Tillsonburg leads 2-1.

If the Blitz win Sunday’s game, the fifth and deciding game of their quarter-final series is to be played Wednesday at Stratford starting at 8:05 p.m.
