Falcons nip Lions to keep second in sight in senior volleyball

GUELPH – The Centre Wellington Falcons kept their eyes on a third-place finish at the completion of the District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball season as they edged the St. James Lions 3-2 Wednesday.

The Falcons won the tight match 23-25, 25-17, 32-34, 28-26, 15-13.

The result left the Falcons and Lions tied for third with 8-5 records and also assured the Lions of winning the tie-breaker as they had won the previous meeting of the season 3-0.

However, both teams have a match to play Thursday. The Falcons are to play the Orangeville Bears (3-10) at Orangeville while the Lions are to host the Ross Royals (12-1).

The race for third is a close one with the Guelph CVI Green Gaels (7-6) also in the mix. The Gaels have a match left against the Bishop Macdonell Celtics (11-2).

In Wednesday’s other match, the Celtics swept the eighth-place Lourdes Crusaders 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-9). The Crusaders (0-13) will finish eighth and play Ross in next week’s quarter-finals.
